Dionne is actually closer in age to Cissy — Whitney's mother — than she is to Whitney herself. They grew up singing together at New Hope Baptist Church in Newark. The Drinkard Singers were a family gospel group; Cissy and Dionne both performed with them as young women. Cissy then raised Whitney, and personally trained her voice. Their first television duet, "You're a Friend of Mine," aired in 1986. In 2012, Dionne hosted Whitney's funeral. "I came from a family who understands what our purpose is," she said. That sentence has stayed with a lot of people.
📺 How they found out: Danielle Brooks appeared on PBS's Finding Your Roots — and the DNA tests revealed she was related to BOTH Niecy Nash AND Sterling K. Brown, who had already been on the show!! Danielle said she is the "connective tissue" — Nash is on one side of her family, Brown on the other!! They already knew each other from the industry before finding out!!
